How to change Data Execution Prevention (DEP) settings in Windows 7 Posted: 30 Aug 2010 09:50 PM PDT Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a feature that helps to protect our system from viruses intrusion and virtually other related threats. Normally the programs running on the system is constantly monitored by Windows and when malicious activity is detected, it will be automatically closed. There are times however when this warning is a false positive rather than the real threat and we insist on running certain programs regardless of the warnings. Adding or removing protection can be easily configured in Windows 7 which will be shown step by step below. 1. To change DEP settings, right-click on the My Computer icon and select properties. Choose on the "Advanced System Settings" link on the left pane. 2. Now you should see system properties windows. Select "Advanced" tab and click "Settings..." under Performance. 3. Performance Option windows will be popped up. Click the "Data Execution Prevention" tab, and then click "Turn On DEP for all programs and services except those I select". To turn off an individual program, you can add a program into the list by clicking on the Add button. By browsing into the system, you need to select the executable file you want to turn off. Once you have configured click OK and close the windows. You might need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. |
