Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for public download on February 22

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 09:35 PM PST

Microsoft has finally announced that the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will be available for public download from February 22 onwards. Fortunately, TechNet subscribers, Volume License customers and Microsoft Developer Network subscribers can start downloading Windows 7 SP1 starting from today. For what it's worth, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is a cumulative bunch of hot fixes and security updates and it does not contain any new feature.

On February 22, Windows 7 Service Pack (SP1) would be available as a direct download through Windows Update or from Microsoft Download Center. Just a useful reminder before you start updating your Windows 7 OS:

  • Ensure the laptop is plugged in while installing Windows 7 SP1
  • Backup important files
  • Free up a bit your hard drive because Windows 7 SP1 installation requires a bit more hard drive space.

Open PDF Attachments in Chrome Viewer [New Gmail Feature]

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 09:15 PM PST

Gmail made an interesting integration with Google Chrome that will benefit those who read mail using the web browser. Until now, users were allowed to view online PDF files via the HTML viewer (Google) but now Google Chrome users can click on the "view" link in Gmail to view PDF files using the built-in PDF viewer.

PDF for viewing plugins, usually installed on PCs, generally are not favored by many uses because they consume a lot of our system resources and on top of that it can risk users because the plugins are easily exploited. The elegant solution is to have a built functionality. Because this feature has successfully been implemented in Google Chrome 8, Google started to use this feature on its other products.

WhiteD00r brings iOS 4.2 to iPod Touch 1G/2G and iPhone 2G/3G

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 04:26 PM PST

Apple discontinued support for the iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1G with the release of iOS 4.0 and both devices can have iOS 4.2.1 but lack of several core features. Even though iPhone 3G owners can enjoy the iOS 4+, they experienced a lot of of problems after the update and the obvious one is the iOS being completely slow.

This beleaguered issue outraged many iPhone users and it was fixed with the release of iOS 4.2.1 even though the sluggish performance is still noticeable. This has pushed iPhone users to downgrade their devices to iOS 3.1.3.

The WhiteD00r is basically a modded version of OS 3.1.3 that looked and performed exactly like iOS 4. The developers behind the WhiteD00r project have recently updated modded iOS 3.1.3 with custom firmware file which contributes a lot of performance tweaks. You can actually watch the official video of WhiteD00r which compares iPhone running on both WhiteD00r and the stock version of iOS 4.2.1.

As we know keyboard shortcuts are meant to increase productivity of our work and it is a good practice to use them on regular basis so you can easily access certain tasks much more faster than you normally do. A couple days ago I posted an article compiling a list of Windows shortcuts and today I will cover a list of keyboard shortcuts for Internet Explorer 9.

So here goes the list.

  • Alt + C – Open up the Favorites/History window/Feeds
  • Alt + Right/Left – move forward/back via your history
  • Alt + X – Open up the Tools menu
  • Ctrl + L – sets your keyboard focus to the One Bar (address bar), and selects the current URL (ripe for Ctrl+C!)
  • Ctrl + D – Bookmark current page to your Favorites list
  • Ctrl + Shift + L – if you have a text string in your clipboard, it searches your default search engine for it; if you have a URL in your clipboard, this shortcut loads it.
  • Ctrl + B – Organize your Favorites
  • Ctrl + K – Duplicates your current tab
  • Ctrl + J – Open up the Download Manager
  • Ctrl + Alt + P – activate an InPrivate Browsing window
  • F12 – open the developer console
  • Alt+7/8/9/Q - in conjunction to F12, the combination changes the rendering mode
  • Alt + N – give focus to the new bottom-hugging Notification bar (Enter for the first button, or Esc to dismiss it)
