Intel introduces Thunderbolt [LightPeak]: Ligthning speed data transfer between PCs

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 12:42 AM PST

Intel has recently unveiled the latest hardware addition to PCs, dubbed Thunderbolt or also known as LightPeak. This hardware allows data transfer at staggering speed between 2 computers. Thunderbolt is bi-directional (i.e.e don't matter which end is which) and it can handle up to 10Gbps dual-channel, per port. At such high speed, Thunderbolt really lives up to the expectation and we simply believe when Intel claims that you can actually transfer a full length HD movie in much less than 30 seconds or even backup an entire MP3 collection in your PC in just under 10 minutes.

With the introduction of this ground breaking hardware, Apple has the opportunity to adopt it on its new line of MacBook Pros; the first portable laptop ever having the technology on-board. The Thunderbolt is currently available on all 3 models of the new MacBook Pro which comes along with a FireWire 800 port and 2 USB 2.0 ports.

In the near future, Thunderbolt is expected to be included onto desktops, high-definition televisions and laptops. To those who worried about the need to buy a new device to take advantage of this technology, Intel has confirmed that Thunderbolt will be compatible with DisplayPort devices.
