Firefox 4 Beta 8 released, Firefox 4 Beta 9 teased

Firefox 4 Beta 8 was released a couple of weeks ago and I only had a chance to test it. This beta release has reduced dramatically the total number of beta blockers, from 626 to 480. Beta 8 includes many bug fixes apart from a refreshed URL bar which indicates the destination of links that were previously displayed in the status bar of the browser. As far as the performance is concerned, we are not aware of any improvements in these builds.

During a meeting that focused on the release strategy of Firefox, Mozilla discussed possible improvements to the previously planned 3-month release schedule for Firefox. While I only read through the meeting minutes, it is somewhat apparent that Mozilla is under pressure to release Firefox versions in accelerated periods. Among the problems that were discussed was the issues of updating Firefox users effectively, extension compatibility, marketing, as well acceleration of QA.

More details about the development release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release notes and in the change log. Firefox 4 Beta 8 is available to download for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux from the project's FTP server.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b4 to untethered jailbreak – No need of usbmuxd process

Redsn0w 0.9.7 beta 4 was just released by iPhone Dev Team and we can see major changes made on the reds0w as it no longer requires you to run a separate program for the usbmux (so no more confusions with the jailbreaking).

Starting with this version, redsn0w no longer requires you to install and run a separate program for the usbmux (this was a non-trivial procedure for many). It's okay to keep that program running if you normally use it for ssh anyway. We also think we've fixed a race condition in the GUI that was causing redsn0w to crash during the "Preparing JB Monte Files" step. Nothing at all has changed on the iPhone side (where the main issues are still just Bluetooth and Skype).
